Overview
During a 30 day challenge I took myself through the entire design process from finding a problem to research, design and test. I chose to explore a productivity app that help boost mood through mindful screen time management
When it comes to the screen time, people can struggle with spending less time on their phones. It’s difficult to rely on one self in making better decisions.
There are different ways to reduce screen time and help people see positive change. In terms of our users, we are looking at the following demographics:
- People that are trying to reduce screen time
- Productivity focused people
- People who need consistency on having less time on screen
I used the Lean UX Canvas to help with the discovery process at the start.
A day in the life...
To really understand our user, I took one persona type and stepped through what a day in their life might look like from morning to bedtime. I mapped their feelings, tasks, thoughts, pain-points and opportunities to help with identifying what the deeper problems might be.
Some common pain points
Not doing anything meaningful
Not focusing on the important things
Motivations to capitalize on
- Reminder to stay off/limit screen time
- Form a community with friends
- Help users build a structure and stay focused
“We believe that as a person with daily tasks, you’ll feel better about yourself by tracking and spending less screen time for 14 days using a screen time app”
Key user journeys
Mapped out key user journeys that our persona would experience on the product. It answers why and how users will use the experience and most important enabled us to stay focused on the user throughout this design process.
Productivity/Less distracted
- I want to feel less distracted and anxious
Keeping track
- I want to feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day
Community
- I want to feel like I’m part of a community

I used a number of different techniques to come up with solutions for the persona, from How Might We’s to Crazy 8s. Then i narrowed down the top ideas and honed in on it.

Job story
User wants to be able to spend less screen time and focus on the important task
Task
User to set timer for the time to use apps on the phone
Job story
User wants to be able to connect with likeminded people, view progress and make it useful, fun for the user
Task
Connect with likeminded people, view progress,
make it fun
Organising user actions
I then created user flows for each of our key user journeys, stress testing that the ideas worked with the users core goals and individual tasks

I then designed for each customer journey thinking through what the key tasks were. This would allow me to test my initial concept.

I’ve landed on this visual sweet spot by scouring the internet for ideas and color palettes, taking inspiration from different apps out there
